IUI Treatment

What is IUI Treatment (Intrauterine insemination treatment)?

  • IUI Treatment (Intrauterine insemination treatment) is one of the most commonly used assisted reproductive procedures. Normally, the sperm swim through the female reproductive organs (cervix uterus, and fallopian tube) to reach the egg. Once the sperm fuses with the egg an embryo develops and grows during pregnancy into a fetus.
  • IUI Procedure is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. The goal of the IUI treatment is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization.
  • The cost of IUI treatment depends on several factors, including the location of the treatment, the specific IUI cycle, the IVF center, health insurance coverage, and more.
  • A single IUI cycle typically costs between Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 5,000, excluding additional expenses such as tests and medications. With these added costs, the total may reach up to Rs. 50,000.
  • Apollo Fertility offers IUI treatment services at multiple centers with different IUI treatment cost in India, with major locations in Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.

When is the IUI Treatment Used?

The most common reasons for doing the IUI Procedure are a low sperm count or decreased sperm mobility. However, it may be a treatment option in the following conditions as well:

  • Unexplained infertility
  • When there is a cervical condition preventing pregnancy including a cervical mucus problem
  • Cervical scar tissue from past procedures may hinder the sperm’s ability to enter the uterus
  • Ejaculation dysfunction with ovulation induction

What is an IUI Treatment procedure?

Before intrauterine insemination, ovulation-stimulating medications may be used and you will be monitored to determine when the eggs are mature.

  • The IUI procedure will be performed around the time of ovulation.
  • A semen sample will be washed by the lab to separate the semen from the seminal fluid.
  • A catheter will then be used to insert the sperm directly into the uterus. This process maximizes the number of sperm cells that are placed in the uterus, thus increasing the possibility of conception.

The entire IUI procedure takes only a few minutes and you may feel little pain.

What Are the Risks Involved with IUI Treatment?

With ovulation induction, the chances of becoming pregnant with multiples are increased. There is also a small risk of infection after IUI.

IUI Treatment Success Rate

The IUI success rate depends on several factors. If a couple has the IUI procedure performed each month, success rates may reach as high as 20% per cycle depending on variables such as female age, the reason for infertility, and whether were used, among other variables.

The success also depends on your age, the cause of infertility, and the type of fertility drugs used.

IUI Success Rate by Age:

  • If your age is less than 35 years, you have 10 to 20 % chance of becoming pregnant
  • If your age is between 35 and 40 years, there is 10 % chance of you becoming pregnant
  • If your age is 40 years and more, you have 2 to 5 % chance of becoming pregnant

Is IUI 100% successful?

No, IUI is not 100 percent. Its success rate depends on such parameters as age, health condition, and cause of infertility. On average, it would be 10% to 20% per cycle of the success rate. In addition, success rates would often lean towards younger women. Thus, especially women younger than 35 years are likely to see more success. It isn't guaranteed, however. To achieve a positive result sometimes a number of cycles will be undertaken.

How long does it take for IUI to work?

After IUI, you’ll typically need to wait about two weeks before taking a pregnancy test. This gives the fertilized egg time to implant in the uterus. Some women may get pregnant on the first try, but for others, it may take several cycles. IUI is not always successful right away.

Is IUI better than IVF?

IUI is less invasive and also cheaper than IVF. It is commonly used in patients with minor male infertility or ovulation problems. However, IVF tends to have better success rates and is usually used in cases of fertility complicated by more complex conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes or severe male infertility. Although IUI is less invasive, IVF tends to be more effective.

Is ICSI better than IVF?

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is a specific form of IVF where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. It’s mainly recommended for severe male infertility, like low sperm count or motility. While IVF works well for many, ICSI offers a more targeted approach to male fertility problems. In cases of male infertility, ICSI can be more effective than IVF.

Who is a good candidate for IUI?

IUI is very effective for patients who experience minimal male factors such as low sperm count or motility, unexplained infertility, cervical issues, or ovulation problems. This procedure can also be suitable for single women or lesbian couples who use donor sperm. Women with blocked fallopian tubes are less ideal candidates unless they can be treated. Age is an important factor, as success rates tend to be much better in younger women.

How painful is IUI?

IUI is generally not painful, but some women may feel mild discomfort when the catheter is inserted into the uterus. This feeling is usually brief and similar to a Pap smear. Many women experience little to no pain. If you’re looking for expert care and a smooth experience, Apollo Fertility offers personalized support throughout.
